Uryu Ishida

Uryu Ishida is one of Bleach's original core cast members, introduced early in the series as a skilled Quincy archer and rival-turned-ally to protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki. For much of the story he was believed to be the last of his kind, a status that shapes both his personal identity and his complicated relationship to the larger Soul Society/Quincy conflict.

Role in the story

Uryu's arc has always been distinct from the rest of Ichigo's friend group — where most of the cast fights for straightforward reasons of protection or duty, Uryu's motivations are tangled up with Quincy history, his family's legacy, and a longstanding tension between Soul Reapers and Quincy that predates the main story by centuries. That tension becomes the central engine of the Thousand-Year Blood War arc, where Uryu's Quincy heritage puts him in a genuinely difficult position relative to the friends he's fought alongside for most of the series.

As the anime adaptation of the Thousand-Year Blood War arc has progressed through its fourth part, "The Calamity," Uryu has remained one of the storylines' most closely watched threads specifically because of that divided loyalty. His conflict with Jugram Haschwalth, one of Yhwach's key lieutenants, has been built up across the arc as a confrontation tied directly to what kind of future Uryu is willing to fight for — Quincy or otherwise.
