Takemichi Hanagaki is the protagonist of Tokyo Revengers, introduced as an unremarkable 26-year-old whose life has stalled — dead-end job, no real relationships, nothing resembling the future he imagined as a teenager. That premise flips the moment he discovers he can leap back in time into his 17-year-old self, landing him back in the middle of the gang conflicts that, in his adult present, ended with people he cared about dead.
The core premise
Unlike a typical time-travel story built around large-scale consequences, Tokyo Revengers keeps its stakes personal — Takemichi isn't trying to save the world, he's trying to save specific people from specific deaths tied to gang violence involving the Tokyo Manji Gang (Toman) and its rivals. Each leap forces him to figure out what decision, conversation, or intervention in the past might change the outcome he already knows is coming, which gives the series a mystery-thriller structure layered on top of its delinquent-gang setting.
Role in the story
Takemichi is decidedly not the strongest fighter in his own story — his value comes from persistence, empathy, and a willingness to take beatings and setbacks that would make most protagonists quit, in service of protecting people the story has already shown him losing. As the story escalates into its final arc, that relationship becomes even more directly central, with Takemichi's understanding of his own time-leaping tied into unraveling exactly what happened to Mikey and why.
