Ryomen Sukuna

The "King of Curses," a legendary curse of unmatched power sealed for over a thousand years before returning to the modern world through Yuji Itadori.

Ryomen Sukuna is Jujutsu Kaisen's most dangerous figure — a curse of legendary, near-unrivaled power known as the "King of Curses," sealed away for over a thousand years before his return to the modern world set the series' entire plot in motion.

Origins and the seal

Sukuna was, in life, a sorcerer whose power was so overwhelming that even after death his remains retained catastrophic curse energy. His fingers were split apart and scattered as cursed objects, each one capable of unleashing his influence if consumed. The series' inciting event comes when protagonist Yuji Itadori swallows one of these fingers to save his friends, binding Sukuna's soul to Yuji's body and setting the stage for a long, uneasy coexistence between the two.

Role in the story

Sukuna spends much of the series as a dormant, deeply dangerous presence inside Yuji, occasionally surfacing to devastating effect whenever the situation calls for power far beyond what any other character can bring to bear. His reputation alone reshapes how other sorcerers and curses approach any situation he's involved in — even briefly manifesting is enough to change the calculus of a fight entirely.

Why he matters heading into Season 4

With the anime's Season 4 confirmed to adapt the "Culling Game Part 2" portion of the story, Sukuna's role becomes increasingly central as the series moves toward its endgame. A teaser visual revealed at Juju Fes 2026 placed him front and center — submerged, reaching toward the viewer, accompanied by the line "Do you remember? I told you that you'd get to see something interesting" — signaling that the character many consider the story's ultimate threat is about to take a much larger role in the anime adaptation than he's had so far.
