Donovan Desmond
The primary target of Operation Strix and Loid Forger's central mission, a powerful political figure whose true nature has been the subject of one of the series' longest-running mysteries.
Donovan Desmond is the primary target of Operation Strix, the mission that sets Spy x Family's entire premise in motion. As a powerful political figure whose actions threaten to destabilize peace between Westalis and Ostania, he's the reason protagonist Loid Forger builds a fake family in the first place — all to get close enough to observe him.
Role in the story
Donovan first appears in Chapter 37, when Loid finally meets his target directly, but the character's real significance develops slowly over the course of the series. Rather than functioning as a straightforward villain, Donovan's presence in the story has increasingly centered on a mystery about his own nature — one that unfolds gradually through the people closest to him rather than through direct confrontation.
The mystery of what happened to him
His wife, Melinda Desmond, has told Loid she suspects Donovan changed dramatically around the time their son Damian was born — becoming distant and, in her account, potentially not fully human. That suspicion is paired with a visual detail: small stitch-like scars on both of Donovan's temples, usually hidden by his hairstyle, that appear to correspond with whatever changed about him. A flashback to his time as a cynical, war-distrustful Eden Academy student shows no scars present at that point, reinforcing that something happened to him later in life.
What's actually been confirmed
For a long stretch of the story, fans and outlets alike read Melinda's account as pointing toward Donovan secretly possessing telepathic powers similar to Anya's. A direct confrontation later in the story complicated that theory significantly — confirming Donovan is human, not something else, while also showing he doesn't actually have telepathic abilities in the way that had been assumed. What his scars and altered personality actually stem from remains tied to research or experimentation of some kind, with hints that his and Anya's pasts may still be connected, even if the exact nature of that connection isn't yet resolved.
Why he matters going forward
As the character whose fate the entire Forger family's mission was built around, Donovan Desmond's unresolved backstory continues to be one of the more significant open threads in Spy x Family — one that ties together the story's espionage plot with its slowly unfolding mysteries about Anya's own origins.
